5 Year Replacement Guideline

Phoenix Performance Products Inc., the parent company of Tipperary Equestrian, is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance in all of our products.

Safety Standards and Certifications

Tipperary helmets meet the ASTM F1163 Standard Specification for Protective Headgear used in horseback riding and horse sports, as established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). You can learn more about these standards at https://www.astm.org/.

Additionally, all Tipperary helmets are SEI Certified by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). SEI is an independent organization that audits our factories to ensure that our materials, manufacturing processes, and factory procedures meet the highest quality standards. They also review our production records and ensure that our helmets are stored in safe, temperature-controlled environments. You can learn more about SEI at www.seinet.org.

Some Tipperary helmets also meet the European EN 1384 standard and include the CE mark to ensure authenticity. You can learn more about CE and European standards at https://standards.cencenelec.eu/

Understanding the Helmet Date Label

The date label inside each Tipperary helmet includes a date of manufacture and series number for internal tracking purposes. Please note, this is not an expiration date. The ASTM standard requires this information in case of a product recall or defect.

Helmet Replacement Guidelines

While Tipperary helmets are built to last, we recommend replacing your helmet within five years from the date of purchase. This recommendation accounts for factors like wear and tear, exposure to sunlight and heat, sweat, hair products, and cleaning agents—each of which can gradually degrade the helmet’s protective qualities over time.

The rate of degradation can vary depending on how frequently the helmet is used and how well it’s cared for. If a helmet no longer fits properly, rocks back and forth on the rider's heard, shows signs of damage, has an odor or other signs of wear and tear, it should be evaluated for replacement.

Post-Crash Replacement

If your helmet is involved in a fall or crash, it must be replaced immediately, even if there are no visible signs of damage.

Advancements in Helmet Technology

It’s also important to note that helmet technology and standards are continuously evolving. Advances in materials, design, and production methods may improve protective features over time, which is another reason for the five-year replacement guideline.

At Tipperary, we are committed to providing the highest level of protection for riders and ensuring that every helmet performs to its fullest potential.
